My introduction to Chesty was at 18 years old, when I entered boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego. Nothing prepared me for this 3-month trial by fire where drill instructors forged young recruits into Marines! General Lewis “Chesty” Puller. A three-star general, having fought in World Wars I, II and Korea, is one of the most well-known figures in Marine Corps history. Having served as both enlisted and officer, he led Marines in some of the bloodiest battles of World War II, earning five Navy Crosses, a Distinguished Service Cross, and a Silver Star, becoming the most highly decorated Marine in history. His motto was, “Lead by example,” which he did every day by living, eating, marching, and sleeping with his men! Nothing exemplifies better what the Marine Corps represents than Lt.
As I have been plugging into the Veteran’s Bridge Home (VBH) events, in Charlotte and meeting veterans in transition, I am reminded of the valuable lessons learned during my time in the Marine Corps that have helped me to be successful. The many leadership traits that are taught in the military such as dependability, decisiveness, integrity, unselfishness, courage, and loyalty are foundational for making veterans great employees for any company!
